Ingredients:
- 1 kg cooking apples, such as Bramley or Granny Smith, peeled, cored, and sliced
- 50g granulated sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg (optional)
- 2 tbsp water
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 175g all-purpose flour
- 100g cold unsalted butter, cubed
- 75g light brown sugar, packed
- 50g rolled oats (optional)
- Pinch of salt
Instructions:
- Combine sliced apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), water, and lemon juice in a saucepan.
- Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the apples are slightly softened but still hold their shape. Aim for 5-7 minutes.
- Pour the cooked apple filling into the baking dish and spread evenly.
- In a large bowl, combine flour, cold cubed butter, brown sugar, rolled oats (if using), and salt.
- Using a pastry blender or your fingertips, cut the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs. Don't overmix!
- Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apple filling.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 190°C (375°F) for 35-40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
- Let the crumble cool slightly before serving.
