Ingredients:

  • 1 kg cooking apples, such as Bramley or Granny Smith, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 50g granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 175g all-purpose flour
  • 100g cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 75g light brown sugar, packed
  • 50g rolled oats (optional)
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions:

  1. Combine sliced apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), water, and lemon juice in a saucepan.
  2. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the apples are slightly softened but still hold their shape. Aim for 5-7 minutes.
  3. Pour the cooked apple filling into the baking dish and spread evenly.
  4. In a large bowl, combine flour, cold cubed butter, brown sugar, rolled oats (if using), and salt.
  5. Using a pastry blender or your fingertips, cut the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs. Don't overmix!
  6. Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apple filling.
  7. Bake in a preheated oven at 190°C (375°F) for 35-40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
  8. Let the crumble cool slightly before serving.
