Ingredients:

  • 2 (14-ounce) cans sweetened condensed milk (400g each)
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Open the cans of sweetened condensed milk and pour into the saucepan. If using baking soda, whisk it into the milk.
  2. Place the saucepan over medium-low heat. Stir constantly to prevent sticking or burning.
  3. Allow the milk to come to a gentle simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Continue stirring frequently for 1-2 hours until thicken and a deep caramel color.
  4. For desired thickness, the mixture should coat the back of a spoon. It will thicken more as it cools.
  5. Once at desired consistency, remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract if desired.
  6. Let it cool slightly, then transfer to a heatproof container. Allow to cool completely before sealing.
