Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (15 ml)
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped (about 1 cup)
  • 1 green bell pepper, finely chopped (about 1 cup)
  • 1 pound ground beef (450g), 80/20 blend recommended for flavor
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder (5 ml)
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika (2.5 ml)
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (1.25 ml) (optional, for a little kick!)
  • 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce (425g)
  • 1/2 cup ketchup (120 ml)
  • 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce (60 ml)
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar, packed (30 ml)
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard (15 ml)
  • 1/4 cup water (60 ml)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 6 hamburger buns, toasted

Instructions:

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion and green bell pepper; sauté until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
  2. Add ground beef to the skillet. Break it up with a spatula and cook until browned, draining off any excess grease.
  3. Stir in garlic powder, smoked paprika, and cayenne pepper (if using). Cook for another minute until fragrant.
  4. Pour in tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, yellow mustard, and water. Stir to combine.
  5. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for at least 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, or longer for a richer flavor. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Spoon the Sloppy Joe mixture onto toasted hamburger buns and serve immediately.
