Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (15 ml)
- 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped (about 1 cup)
- 1 green bell pepper, finely chopped (about 1 cup)
- 1 pound ground beef (450g), 80/20 blend recommended for flavor
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder (5 ml)
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika (2.5 ml)
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (1.25 ml) (optional, for a little kick!)
- 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce (425g)
- 1/2 cup ketchup (120 ml)
- 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce (60 ml)
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar, packed (30 ml)
- 1 tablespoon yellow mustard (15 ml)
- 1/4 cup water (60 ml)
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 6 hamburger buns, toasted
Instructions:
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion and green bell pepper; sauté until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
- Add ground beef to the skillet. Break it up with a spatula and cook until browned, draining off any excess grease.
- Stir in garlic powder, smoked paprika, and cayenne pepper (if using). Cook for another minute until fragrant.
- Pour in tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, yellow mustard, and water. Stir to combine.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for at least 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, or longer for a richer flavor. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper to taste.
- Spoon the Sloppy Joe mixture onto toasted hamburger buns and serve immediately.
