Ingredients:

  • 6 cups peeled, cored, and chopped apples (Granny Smith or another tart variety)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 cup apple cider or juice
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions:

  1. Peel, core, and chop the apples into small pieces.
  2. In a slow cooker or pot, combine apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cider, spices, lemon juice, and salt.
  3. For a slow cooker, set on low for 6-8 hours. For stovetop, bring to a boil then reduce heat to low, cooking covered for 2-3 hours.
  4. Stir the mixture every 30 minutes, ensuring nothing sticks to the bottom.
  5. Once apples are very soft, use an immersion blender or transfer to a regular blender and blend until desired smoothness.
  6. Return to the heat and simmer uncovered until thickened to your liking (about 30-45 minutes).
  7. Transfer to sterilized jars, seal, and store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. For longer storage, process in a water bath for canning.
