Ingredients:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef (or Italian sausage)
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (28 oz/800g) crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 12 oz (340g) ziti pasta (or penne)
  • 2 cups (480g) ricotta cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups (200g) shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup (50g) grated parmesan cheese

Instructions:

  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add ziti and cook until al dente according to package instructions. Drain and set aside.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, brown ground beef or sausage. Use a wooden spoon to crumble the meat as it cooks.
  3. Add onions and garlic; sauté until softened. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, and spices. Let simmer for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. In a mixing bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix well.
  5. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom of the baking dish. Layer half of the cooked ziti over the sauce, followed by half of the ricotta mixture and half of the meat sauce. Sprinkle with 1 cup of mozzarella cheese. Repeat the layers with the remaining ingredients.
  6. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove foil, sprinkle remaining mozzarella and parmesan on top, and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, until bubbly and golden.
  7. Let it cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
