  1. Place the sifted powdered sugar and salt into a medium mixing bowl.
  2. Pour in the vanilla extract and the initial 4 tablespoons of milk or half-and-half.
  3. Whisk vigorously until most of the sugar is incorporated, forming a very thick paste.
  4. Slowly add the remaining liquid, one teaspoon at a time, while continuously whisking. Stop adding liquid when the glaze is smooth, shiny, and drips slowly off the whisk, holding its shape briefly before folding back into the bowl (it should coat the back of a spoon thickly).
  5. Ensure your freshly fried or baked donuts are cooled slightly—they should be warm, not hot.
  6. Working one at a time, dip the top of the donut completely into the glaze. Lift and gently turn to allow excess to drip off.
  7. Place the glazed donut onto a wire rack set over a baking sheet. Allow the glaze to set completely (about 15–20 minutes) before serving or stacking.
